Grant Helps New Franklin Fire Department Add New Truck to Fleet

The New Franklin Fire Department has added a brand-new Pierce Saber Pumper Truck to service the City of New Franklin. The new engine, manufactured in Bradenton, Florida, essentially replaces two existing rescue vehicles and incorporates the latest innovations in fire apparatus available.

New Franklin Fire Chief Steve Leslie stated “We are fortunate to have received a grant for over $500,000 to purchase this truck that replaces a 1984 engine and hopefully will serve the department for the next thirty plus years.” He also explained the truck will be the department’s primary response vehicle to structure fires as it is outfitted to provide all the equipment needed to rapidly extinguish fires. “We have also been able to configure this truck with vehicle extraction tools, which allows us to respond to auto accidents and remove people trapped in vehicles,” Chief Leslie added. The department plans to eventually remove a 1993 rescue vehicle from service since the new truck fulfills the needs of the older model currently being used.

A 2019 Assistance to Firefighter’s Grant paid for 95% of the purchase price of the firetruck, which amounted to $529,524 leaving just $27,862 to be paid by the New Franklin Fire Department. The department extends their appreciation to Didi Everhart with Gatchell Grant Resources, Phil McLean with Sensible Products, and retired New Franklin Fire Lieutenant Leland Matheny who helped facilitate the grant process along with New Franklin Mayor Paul Adamson and the members of City Council. The department also recognizes the outstanding efforts by the Truck Committee that helped research and outfit the truck to ensure it serves the citizens of New Franklin for many years to come. This committee includes New Franklin Assistant Fire Chief Tim Young (Chairman), Lieutenant Dan Ferguson, Firemedics Brad Miller, Rich Huggins, and Adam Guillod.
