Witness Tree Ceremony Daily November 1 – 11 at noon
Green is one of several local communities with a Witness Tree, an outreach of the local organization, a Warriors’ Journey Home. The Witness Tree is a five-and-a-half-foot metal tree sculpture designed to create awareness to the 22 veteran suicides that occur daily in our country. Daily from November 1 – 11, volunteers host a brief ceremony at noon at the Green Witness Tree located at the Veterans Park. Each day an additional 22 dog tags are draped on its branches. On November 11 at noon, the final dog tags will be placed to symbolize the 242 lives lost from November 1 through November 11. The daily ceremony is open to all.
According to a Warriors Journey Home, the word ‘witness’ means to bear testimony to the truth. The truth our veterans often live is kept in silence. The Witness Tree is a small sliver of light opening us to a wider truth, that we all bear responsibility for war and the need to walk with our veterans on their journey home.
